Alleged ‘grandparent scammer’ charged with felonies in Portsmouth NH

The New Hampshire Attorney General alleges an out-of-state man checked into a Portsmouth hotel and later possessed $16,200 stolen from an older state resident while in the city last fall.

Elvis Guzman, 43, of Paterson, New Jersey, faces four felony counts from a Rockingham County grand jury this month. He allegedly scammed elderly Granite Staters who were falsely told their grandchildren had been arrested and would need cash bail to be released.

Guzman was previously arrested by the Londonderry Police Department last Nov. 6.

In one four-day spree last October, one indictment alleges, Guzman and his co-conspirators received over $100,000 from New Hampshire residents who fell victim to the alleged “grandparent scams.”

Guzman has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit theft by deception, one count of theft by deception and one count of receiving stolen property. All four charges are Class A felonies.
