Cheryl Grossman, executive director of the Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, said she’s never heard of anyone running the kind of unlicensed funeral home business that authorities accuse Shawnte Hardin of operating.
Investigators say the Akron pastor has been providing funeral services, unlicensed, since about 2014. During that time, customers and others in the industry have complained about Hardin bouncing checks, improperly storing bodies and turning up with rotting corpses, records show.

Grossman said consumers can protect themselves by checking a funeral director’s license, which is required by law to be openly displayed, hanging in the funeral facility.
