In the 1970s, Joe Biden portrayed himself as a social conservative. “My wife said I was the most socially conservative man she had ever known,” Biden said in a 1974 interview with the Washingtonian. “[W]hen it comes to issues like abortion, amnesty, and acid, I’m about as liberal as your grandmother.” That was a reference to the description of the Democrats as the party of abortion, amnesty, and acid under George McGovern.
One of Biden’s first acts will be to reverse Trump’s ban on transgender troops.
Today, the Democrats under Biden make McGovern look moderate. They have blown past abortion, amnesty, and acid and now spearhead even more outré causes, such as transgenderism for children. According to Biden, “Transgender equality is the civil rights issue of our time.”
As president, Biden intends to make that issue a priority of his administration. He has already named a transgender military veteran, Shawn Skelly, to propose changes at the Department of Defense. Another notable Biden transition official on this front is the lesbian activist Chai Feldblum, who has been asked to propose changes at the Department of Justice. Feldblum is an outspoken opponent of religious freedom. In a 2006 article, she called for curtailing “belief liberty” in the name of advancing LGBTQ rights: “Protecting one group’s identity may, at times, require that we burden others’ belief liberty. This is an inherent and irreconcilable reality of our complex society.”
Biden is in no danger of sounding like a grandmother on social issues anymore. Now he prides himself on his wokeness, tossing out trendy phrases such as “the non-binary” in his speeches. He has promised sweeping changes across the federal government and military. One of Biden’s first acts will be to reverse Trump’s ban on transgender troops. On the campaign trail, Biden touted this promise often, saying that the transgendered should not only “serve openly” but also “receive needed medical treatment.” In other words, he expected American taxpayers to pick up the tab for transitional surgeries. Now, apparently, they will.
Biden also views America’s schools as social engineering labs. Before the Biden Foundation folded up in 2019, it had a special program for transgender youth. Biden champions them over parents, whose objections he regards as “transphobic.” Biden’s Department of Education, as he promised during the campaign, will serve as the Left’s battering ram against parental rights.
“On his first day in office, Biden will reinstate the Obama-Biden guidance revoked by the Trump-Pence Administration, which will restore transgender students’ access to sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms in accordance with their gender identity,” said his campaign website. “He will direct his Department of Education to vigorously enforce and investigate violations of transgender students’ civil rights.”
Arne Duncan, Obama’s education secretary, once proposed special public schools catering to LGBTQ-identified students. No doubt Biden’s secretary of education will float similar ideas.
Biden is even less hesitating on these matters than Obama, who waited several years into his presidency before changing his stance on gay marriage officially. Biden, complained Obama, had gotten out “ahead of his skis” on that issue. Instead of blunting Obama’s radicalism, Biden accelerated it. Biden’s supposed moderation was a sham.
For all of his talk about growing up on the “streets of Scranton,” Biden has the intolerant instincts of a Hollywood liberal. He has every intention of bending the entire country to his transgender ideology. “It is about freeing the soul of America from the constraints of bigotry, hate, and fear, and opening people’s hearts and minds to what binds us all together,” he has said. The soul of America? Only Biden would combine the vocabulary of Catholicism with the corrupting ideology of libertinism.
He seeks not the restoration of America’s soul but its disintegration under the pressures of the most outlandish Brave New World experiments. America’s Judeo-Christian traditions are steadily eroding. Biden seeks to wipe them out completely.
He started his career by criticizing George McGovern’s agenda. But as president, he hopes to enact it: he has executive orders lined up to promote abortion and amnesty. His opposition to drug legalization is also a dim memory. His plans are anything but moderate, focusing not on the ordinary concerns of middle-class Americans but the boutique causes of the far Left, with the promotion of transgenderism topping the list.
