Durham police say a certain kind of online marketplace scam is on the rise.

According to investigators, scammers are posting online ads for expensive cell phones.

When someone responds to these ads, they usually end up paying between $1,200 and $1,400 for the device.

The victims then receive a completely sealed box with a fake phone on the inside.

Officers say you should be very cautious when buying anything online.

If you have any information about this kind of scam or you’ve been scammed, call local police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
