Fraudsters travelled from London to Cardiff with false ID to scam phone shops

Fraudsters travelled from London to Cardiff with fake passports in order to take out phone contracts they had no intention of paying.

Michael Sado, 52, and Shuaib Muhammed, 38, visited a number of phone shops in Queen Street on December 19, 2019, in order to scam employees into giving them phones on a credit agreement. But the contracts were signed under false identities with the aid of fake documents which meant the scammers could walk away with free handsets.

They were caught when a security guard in Debenhams became suspicious when the men took out a store card and maxed it out on purchases straightaway.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard Sado took contracts out at the Samsung store for two Galaxy Fold devices which he purchased on finance using a passport under the name Brian Whitehouse which had his own photo.
