New Hampshire business leaders say ongoing border restrictions hurt economy

New Hampshire business leaders and families told U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen on Friday that the United States’ decision to extend the closure of its land border with Canada is hurting them.The ban on nonessential travel from Canada has been extended through at least Aug. 21. Shaheen said she’s glad that Canada is reopening its border to vaccinated U.S. travelers on Aug. 9, but the inability for Canadian visitors to come to New Hampshire is hurting state businesses.Shaheen heard from businesses and associations from across the state, along with the Canadian consul general. They told Shaheen that the extension of the border closure hurts the state’s economic recovery and families with loved ones on both sides of the border. “Hopefully we’ll get our State Department to align with Canada on this border opening,” Shaheen said.Some of the most striking economic numbers came from the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce, which said that in Hampton Beach alone,…
