New York man posed as fitness model to con men in romance scams, steal COVID unemployment money from Massachusetts, other states, feds say


Fraudulent Gmail accounts, fake driver’s license and a fitness model’s stolen identity: These are the means a New York man is accused of using to run unemployment and romance scams that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and targeted residents across the country, from Massachusetts to Oregon, federal authorities detailed.

In court records unveiled this week, the FBI claimed Damilola Adepoju, the 29-year-old Brooklyn man accused at being at the center of the scheme, and a coconspirator submitted fraudulent coronavirus pandemic unemployment claims and applied for disaster-assistance loans to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) using stolen personally identifiable information.

In some instances, court records stated, Adepoju and the coconspirator targeted elderly victims through the romance scams, taking the victims’ personal information to launder the proceeds of their schemes.
