Berkley police say two women who live in the city were recently swindled out of a total of $15,000.
Berkley Public Safety Lt. Andrew Hadfield said police have gotten several fraud reports where victims were directed to send cash through bitcoin automated teller machines in the area.
The scammers called and represented themselves to the women as either federal employees or Berkley Public Safety officers.
The swindlers even had the ability to make the caller ID on victim’s phones show the incoming calls appear as though they were coming from the Berkley Public Safety Department.
“In one of the scams they falsely told the female victim they were working on warrants that were out for her arrest,” Hadfield said.
One Berkley woman lost $10,000 and the other was out $5,000.
