Individuals posing as Guernsey County sheriff’s detectives contacted at least two local residents Tuesday seeking money as part of an on-going scam.
The two women reported the scammers asked for money to resolve outstanding arrest warrants. One victim sent $1,000 via gift cards purchased at a Cambridge business.
An alert employee at a second business is credited with preventing the woman from purchasing a second $1,000 in gift cards by alerting her to the scam. The manager then contacted Cambridge police at the request of the woman.
“My office has taken multiple reports from citizens receiving calls from scam artists,” said Guernsey County Sheriff Jeff Paden. “These scam artists are asking that you go to a bank and withdraw money. Do not give out any personal information and do not send money to these individuals.”
