Utility company National Grid warns consumers of potential scams

The utility company National Grid has issued a warning to consumers about potential phone and email scams that may be targeting customers.

The company said people claiming to be from National Grid are contacting customers over the phone and through email saying that you have a past due balance while promising a savings on your next utility bill, according to WKBW.

The scammers might also threaten to shut off service unless you purchase a prepaid debit card for an undisclosed amount, provide a Social Security number, and a National Grid account number.

National Grid said the calls are not from National Grid. Although the company does notify customers about past due bills via phone, they do not solicit prepaid debit cards as direct payment.

If you have fallen prey to the scam, contact your local law enforcement agency.
